I would definitely recommend staying with a host family when you are at Spanish school! My daughter and I just got back from a trip to Guatemala and Belize, and the first week we stayed at Lake Atitlan with a family and studied Spanish. Sure, the accommodations were a little basic, but the great home made meals, and the interactions with the parents and kids were a true highlight of our trip!

RM,

Thanks for the opinion. I'm definitely leaning that way. I also want to try finally to join Servas and stay with a host family not connected with the school, just for one night, to see how that works.
I don't mind basic accommodations at all. If there's a bed and hot water, I'm good. Even cold water isn't terrible in a warm place. ;-)
I'd also love to stay with a family with kids. Maybe I can request that.
Gracias por tu mensaje.
